"Smells like Summer" is an image that provokes warm emotion by color and posed form. In it, we see a model that appears to flow from the lower right corner of the picture and fill the top with folded arms for perfect composition, allowing for almost equal amount of background visibility to the right and left of her. Shadows in the bright environment are soft and used well by the model and photographer to provide depth ("3-D") to her form, especially of/under her chin and of her breast cleavage, whereas direct frontal lighting would cause a lack of this effect. The picture is strongly a display type, with the sharp subject against a blurry background having no eye contact with the camera. Also, the vague match of her swimsuit pattern with the blurred more distant stones in the lower left portion of the picture gives one the impression that she is in her element. The expression on her face: eyes half-closed, with her hands up and back behind her head, show a carefree relaxed atmosphere. A sense of smell described in the title is not well-portrayed here, which would better attest to "Feels/Seems like Summer." To correspond more with the title given then, this observer would have had the model close her eyes completely, tilt her head back, and smile more -- to thus have her nose up in the air distinctly appearing to smell the sea/summer air. So, this work fares better in technique(s) than with vision despite having considerable subjective eye appeal.
